Navigating Trials with Hope and Resilience

Posted on July 25, 2025July 25, 2025 by Brother Sjambok
Christian Suffering

As Christians, we often grapple with the question of why suffering exists, especially when we strive to live a life pleasing to God. If we are following Christ, why do hardships still find their way to our doorstep? I look around at my fellow friends and believers and my own life, and the question beckons: Are we always going to suffer as Believers?

Are Christians Always Going to Suffer?

The short answer is, yes, in some form or another. The Bible doesn’t promise a life devoid of hardship for believers. In fact, it suggests the opposite. Jesus himself said, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). This promise isn’t meant to discourage us, but to prepare us. Even if we can’t remember a time of hardship, the reality is we all struggle, deal with hardship, and suffer while trying to stay on the narrow path.

Does the Hardship Ever Stop for a Christian?

While suffering is a constant possibility in the Christian life, it’s important to remember that hardship is not eternal. The intensity and duration of suffering can vary greatly depending on the context. We had friends back in Zimbabwe, actually a Pastor and his wife, and for the entire time we knew them, they were dealt with blow after blow with struggles. It seemed everyone else was doing great, but this couple knew hardship on a different level. No money, no food, poor health, no transport, no support structure in as much as a family to help – just insurmountable struggles. What stood out to us all, was that they never for a moment, gave up, surrendered or quit. In fact the opposite – the very little they had they shared and always put others before their own needs. They left an inedible impression on us with their faithfulness. Today, they are both no longer with us, and so as far as hardship and suffering this side of life, they definitely no longer face any of it.

Why Is Suffering Part of the Christian Life?

  1. It refines faith – Like gold tested in fire (1 Peter 1:7).
  2. It draws us closer to Christ – Who also suffered for our sake.
  3. It separates superficial faith from true commitment – Following Christ means carrying your cross (Luke 9:23).
  4. It produces endurance and maturity – “Count it all joy…” James 1:2–4.

Jubber Journal Conclusion:

Suffering is expected. But it is not meaningless. For Christians, suffering is part of sharing in Christ’s life—and also His victory. It deepens faith, purifies the soul, and keeps our eyes on eternity.

“For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.” — 2 Corinthians 4:17
