When we talk about “the Lord called me into ministry” sometimes this is an easy and automatic transition that can take place in a short space of time, in other instances it is a process that may span decades.
After I accepted Jesus Christ into my life as my Lord and Savior, at the age of 16 while on a youth camp in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, we were tasked with finding a quiet place to pray, read scripture and meditate on our time with the Lord. I was reading scripture and found myself drawn to the OT book of Jeremiah.
Jeremiah 1:4-9
4″The Lord’s message came to me,
5 “Before I formed you in your mother’s womb I chose you.
Before you were born I set you apart.
I appointed you to be a prophet to the nations.”
6 I answered, “Oh, Sovereign Lord, Really I do not know how to speak well enough for that, for I am too young.” 7 The Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ But go to whomever I send you and say whatever I tell you. 8 Do not be afraid of those to whom I send you, for I will be with you to protect you,” says the Lord. 9 Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, “I will most assuredly give you the words you are to speak for me.” (NET)
This year I will be turning 59 years old, and so the process of walking into the calling the Lord placed on my life has literally been ongoing since I was 16 years old, with many ups and downs, and moments of catastrophic sin and failure, that has spanned 42 years. Through the entire process, I have always known that the calling on my life to serve the Lord in a ministry capacity has been undeniable. I have spent my career in the printing industry, having started as an apprentice, operating large offset printing equipment, branching into sales, then management, and following our path to the USA where I served as VP of Operations in two separate printing establishments, and as president in a Fortune 500 corporation overseeing annual sales revenues averaging $15 million. In addition to working in the corporate space, there has always been an entrepreneurial pull, and so both Nancy and I have had the amazing adventure of owning and operating businesses in the printing space, both locally in Colorado and remotely in Nevada. Through my entire career path, the Lord was actively working behind the scenes, even when I didn’t think He was working, forming and shaping me extensively.
Fast forward away from business and corporate hoop jumping, the Lord drew us to a small fellowship through one of our companies in the printing space, and we became part of the family at Mount View Bible Church and began serving faithfully with the local body of believers. I became an Elder and over the past 3 years through much testing, prayer and wise counsel from the Leadership, now see the calling of the Lord on my life being confirmed through the ordination and commissioning into the role of Pastor.
